It is important for a chemist to recognize the identity of an element from its symbol and to readily represent an element by using its symbol. You, as chemistry students, are expected to be able to do these things with those elements commonly used in class. The names of the elements for which you are going to be held responsible for knowing their correct symbols, as well as the correct spelling of the element's name are given at the bottom of this page. Practice spelling them as well as identifying them from their symbols. There will be two (2) quizzes on them: (1) you will be given the name of the element and asked to write the correct symbol and (2) you will be given the symbol and asked to write the name of the element which it represents, spelled correctly.Group the elements into four (4) groups based on their symbols:

- Elements whose symbols are the first letter of the element's name.
- Elements whose symbols are the first two letters of the element's name.
- Elements whose symbols are the first letter and a second predominant letter.
- Elements whose symbols are based on the Latin or other language name for the element.
