The Virginia Tech Department of Chemistry has a long history, a solid reputation and a bright future. Our courses provide the chemical foundation for all Virginia Tech science and engineering students and broaden their understanding about the structure and properties of matter. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare society's future chemists and scientists. Our faculty's research and scholarships generate and disseminate chemistry knowledge to the Commonwealth, the Nation and the world. Our outreach programs offer opportunities to share this knowledge with others, including practicing professionals, as well as primary and secondary school children. To achieve our mission, the Virginia Tech Department of Chemistry will continue to pursue multi-disciplinary research within and beyond the University, to find innovative ways to instruct students, to forge partnerships with industry and government, and to establish a reputation as one of the world's highest ranking chemistry departments.
The Chemistry Department's original building is historic Davidson Hall, built in the 1930s. Davidson Hall, which contains faculty offices, departmental administrative offices, and laboratories, was vacated in May 2011 and will be demolished, saving only the historic stone facade. Davidson will be replaced with a new 60,000 square foot modern teaching-and-research building, which will be likely occupied by 2014. Hahn Hall, our main research and faculty office building, was built in 1980. A third building, initially named Chemistry/Physics, was built and occupied in 2002 and contains primarily teaching laboratories and some research instrumentation. In 2009 the Chemistry/Physics Building was recommissioned as Hahn Hall South, and the original Hahn Hall was renamed Hahn Hall North. This cluster of buildings is on the northwest side of the Drillfield, across West Campus Drive from the Duck Pond and The Inn at Virginia Tech. The links at right provide maps and directions to the Virginia Tech campus and to the Department. During the interval when Davidson Hall is being rebuilt, several research groups will occupy space in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. These buildings are VT KnowledgeWorks 2, the Integrated Life Sciences Building, and another building that has not yet been identified.
The Chemistry Department is committed to fostering diverse instructional, research, and outreach environments. We endorse the principles and procedures established by:
