Grading Criteria
| Homework: | Ten homework assignments will be given during the semester, each of which must be turned in by the beginning of class on the due date. Late homework assignments will receive an automatic 25% deduction, and no assignments will be accepted after solutions have been distributed. | 20% |
| Two-hour exams: | Three, two-hour exams will be given beginning at 7:00 pm on the following dates: 2/13, 3/20, and 4/17. | 60% |
| Final exam: | A cumulative, two-hour exam will be given Saturday, May 5th, 2007, at 3:25 pm. | 20% |
| All exams are closed-book and closed-notes. Each student will be allowed to bring to each exam a 3x5” index card with any material written thereon that he/she considers important. Calculators will also be allowed (necessary, in fact), but no pre-programmed equations or notes are acceptable. All students are expected to abide by the Virginia Tech Honor Code. |
| The basis for grade assignment is the class median; those scoring above the median will receive a grade between A+ and B-, inclusive. To allow for particularly good classes, however, any final score over 74% will receive at least a B-. |
Announcements
I have posted koofers for the final exam to be held this Saturday, May 5th, at 3:25 pm.Based on guidelines from Provost McNamee, I ask that each student choose from among the following options:
- You may take your current grade in the class based on all the material you've already submitted (homework sets 1-8 and exams 1 and 2).
- You may complete any subset of the remaining assignments (homework set 10, exam 3, and the final exam) to add to your total grade.
- You may complete the course as originally defined in the syllabus.
- You may withdraw from the class completely with no penalty. (This option does not count towards the six credit-hour limit of the Course Withdrawal Policy.)
- In order to decide from among the above options, you need to know where you stand in the class. I have posted your current grades on the Blackboard website, as well as your "Tentative Grade" as of April 20th. If you choose option #1, this would be the grade you would receive in the class. (If you have trouble accessing the information on Blackboard or if the grades don't display correctly, please let me know. This is the first time I've ever used this utility, and I'm not 100% certain I've set everything up correctly.)
- Even if you choose the first option, I want to encourage you to continue to attend the remaining lectures. We will have class on Tuesday morning in our usual room, ChemP 402. I would like to try to continue our discussion of spectroscopy with the fundamentals of NMR.
- If you wish to take the third exam, I will post it on the class website this coming Tuesday night. You may complete it at your leisure, taking as much time as you need. The exam is still closed-book/closed-notes, and you are allowed to use a 3x5" index card, as usual. You must still follow the Virginia Tech honor code to complete the exam, and you must submit it to me by our last class on Tuesday, May 1st.
- Our final exam will be held as planned at 3:25 pm on Saturday, May 5th.
