Science Mandela

Artistic and architectural representations of mathematics and the natural sciences.

Most ancient scientific representation concerned astronomy: solar, planetary and stellar. Clearly one important concern was the passage of time reflected in the passage of days and seasons: thus the special interest in sundials and zodiacal representations. Recent studies being prepared include

Vinivilla Acrostic

Many sundials, and most sundialers, have some appropriate message on time - most are sunny! At our vineyard, Vinivilla, we had the following acrostic burned into a wooden dial pedestal - unfortunately it has not weathered well - too much sun!

So it was cast in stone (clay tiles) along with about 100 others and cemented vertically on the four faces of a 12 foot (365.25 cm) concrete Obelisk Sundial. It is a scaled (1/6) model of the ancient Egyptian obelisk (21.8 m) erected in Rome by Emperor Augustus as a sundial over 2000 years ago. Our globe is a bit more modern. It holds a photoelectric cell, Ni-Cd batteries, and a photodiode that glows after the sun goes down.
