Funding

Major funding for the Mobile Chemistry Laboratory (MCL) has come from federal, state, and private sources.

The National Science Foundation has awarded two grants to support the operation of the MCL and the workshops.

  • NSF-CHE; Chemistry Outreach to Secondary Schools with a Mobile Chemistry Laboratory, $97,142 (PI: G. Long; CoPIs: L. Taylor, B. Bunn, C. Slebodnick), September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2002, for support of first year of MCL operation and Summer 2001 Advanced MCL Workshop NSF-CHE-0079119
  • NSF-CHE; Chemistry Outreach to Secondary Schools with a Mobile Chemistry Laboratory, $300,000 (renewal, PI: G. L. Long, CoPIs: C. Slebodnick, B. Bunn and L. Taylor), September 1, 2001 to August 30, 2004, for MCL and Summer Basic and Advanced MCL Workshop (2001-2004) support. NSF-CHE-011150

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program (administered through the State Council of Higher Education) has funded three summer workshops.

  • Eisenhower Foundation; Outreach to Secondary Schools with a Mobile Chemistry Laboratory, $40,000 (PIs: C. Slebodnick and B. Bunn), January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2000, for support of Summer 2000 Basic MCL Workshop.

  • Eisenhower Foundation; Extending the Outreach of the MCL through ChemKits, $32,452 (PI: G. Long, Co-PI: B. Bunn) January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002, for support of Summer 2002 ChemKit Workshop.

Private sources of funding include the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation for the equipping of the MCL the computers and data stations ($40,000) and the support of the Industrial Scientist Partner Program ($25,000).

The DuPont Company has provided support for the traveling teacher for the past three years. Beginning this year, the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine is providing partial support of the Region Teacher. Volvo America provided the tractor while and the Featherlite Corporation and Fountaine Modification Inc. greatly assisted in the construction of the transporter. The Virginia Tech Foundation and the Division of Outreach and International affairs provided funds for the purchasing and equipping of the transporter.

Recent corporate sponsors include the TDC Corporation (Dr. Tomas Hudlicky).

Total corporate giving is $311,500 since the inception of the program. Contributions from Virginia Tech total $187,000. Contributions from the Virginia Tech Foundation is $265,000. Total grant activity is $550,000.

Schools and/or school districts are not charged for the MCL or the ChemKit Program.

Note: Funding for the program was eliminated from the 2004 House Budget. Because no funds were provided by the General Assembly for this program, the MCL was placed in storage for an indefinite period of time.
