By late 1944, allied bombing was taking its toll on German production and importation of raw materials. Although production totals of many wartime goods reached their peak during 1944-1945, the quality of the goods was in many cases poor as raw materials were short in supply.  Nickel was a prime componenet of the Jumo Junkers turbine engines that powered the ME-262. Unfortunately, the nickel supply was severely constricted thus forcing manufactuers to use low grade ore. This greatly compromised the quality of the jet engines, shorting their operational life before an overhall was mandatory to a mere 6 hours.
