Instructions
The documents on this diskette provide an introduction to chemical equilibria with examples, practice problems, and solutions to hone your problem-solving skills. The equilibria problems assume some basic knowledge of chemistry. Take the pre-test and then review the background material before beginning II. General Solution to Equilibria Problems.
After reviewing the background material and the equilibrium introduction (sections I. and II.), you can continue to any of the other sections. If you are learning equilibrium for the first time, do sections VI. Weak Acids and Bases, V. Advanced Acid/Base, and VI. Buffers in the order in which they are listed.
Each section contains a list of problems. After reading the introduction and studying the sample problem, print the problem list and work the problems on paper. If you get stuck or want to check an answer, then use the on-line version of the problem.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU WORK THROUGH THE PROBLEMS YOURSELF.
Looking at the solution and rationalizing the procedure does not help you to develop your thinking skills. You must work the problems from scratch. Working with a partner and discussing the problems can be very beneficial if there is a two-way dialog.
User Notes
- This diskette contains the HTML document files only. You must supply the browser to use them.
- Netscape Navigator for Windows requires starting from the index.htm home page to find subsequent files. If Navigator 4.5 has trouble finding files try double clicking on the index.htm file from Windows Explorer to get started.
- When you select a problem it opens in a new window. When you are done close the problem window.
- If you are using a DOS/Windows diskette in a Macintosh computer, the individual files can be opened by Netscape Navigator, but the hyperlinks will not work.
- The pages with interactive capability require a browser that supports JavaScript (Netscape Navigator 2.0+, Internet Explorer 3.0+, etc.).
- Adjust the frame size by positioning the mouse cursor over the frame. The mouse pointer will change to a double line symbol.
- To print documents in frames, mouse click inside the frame before printing. In Netscape for Windows you can open a frame in a new window by placing the mouse cursor in the frame and right clicking to bring up a menu. On a Macintosh hold down the mouse button inside the frame.
- The units of the answers are given, do not enter units in the input boxes.
- Answers can be entered with scientific notation, e.g., 5.43e-3.
- The answers use the correct number of significant figures.
