Research facilities within the Chemistry Department include instrumentation laboratories and shops. Please use the links at left to explore our capabilities.

Instrumentation Laboratories

The Chemistry Department maintains a broad selection of state-of-the-art research instrumentation.  A key feature of all our labs is the availability of skilled and dedicated technical staff members who keep the instruments well-maintained and help students with user training, sample prep, data interpretation, and instrument scheduling.

  • Analytical Service Laboratory (ASL).  Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR) facilities are managed by the Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL), located in RB-26 (CRC) and Hahn Hall South 006.
  • Surface Analysis Lab.  Located in Hahn 008, this lab features X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Chemical Crystallography Lab.  Our crystallography lab is part of a College of Science X-ray Diffraction facility (VTX) located in the Integrated Life Sciences Building (ILSB) in the VT Corporate Research Center.
  • Other Campus Labs Used by Chemistry Personnel:
    • ICTAS Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory (link)
    • Biochemistry Department Mass Spectrometry Lab (link)
    • Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Core Laboratory Facility (link)

Support Shops

Electronics -- Our department presently maintains two electronics shops -- one for instrumentation and repair (Instrument Maintenance Shop), and the other for computers and networks (Computer Division).

Glassworks -- Our Glass Shop is located in Hahn Hall South 1006.

Machinery -- Users needing machine shop services are asked to call the Physics Department (which is next door to Chemistry) or the Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) Department.
