Chem Alum, Abhishek Roy, of Dow Receives 13th Annual SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal
(August 2016) The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), America Section, will award the 13th annual SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal to Dr. Abhishek Roy, who earned his PhD under the guidance of Prof. James E. McGrath in the macromolecular science and engineering program. Roy is the lead product research and development manager and technical platform leader for the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane chemistry platform of Dow Energy and Water Solutions. He has authored 30 peer reviewed journal articles and holds 10 issued patents, with many pending on his RO work. Roy was recognized with numerous awards including Dow’s prestigious Sustainability Innovator Award and Virginia Tech’s outstanding recent alumnus award from the College of Science. Virginia Tech Presents Joseph DeSimone with 2016 University Distinguished Achievement Award
Professor Joseph M. DeSimone, chief executive officer and co-founder of Carbon, will receive Virginia Tech’s 2016 University Distinguished Achievement Award, which is presented each year at commencement. The award recognizes achievements of national distinction in any field of enduring significance to society.
Later this month, DeSimone will be honored by President Obama with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. That award recognizes people who have made lasting contributions to America’s competitiveness and quality of life while helping strengthen the nation’s technological workforce. Prof. DeSimone earned his PhD in 1990 under the direction of Prof. Jim McGrath, who passed away in 2014.
Former Harry Gibson Student Earns Major Award
Professor Feihe Huang (Zhejiang University) was just named as the recipient of the 2016 Polymer Chemistry Lectureship award. This award, now in its second year, honors an early-stage career researcher who has made significant contribution to the polymer chemistry field. The recipient is selected by the Polymer Chemistry Editorial Board from a list of candidates nominated by the community. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry during the spring of 2005 with the aid and guidance of Prof. Harry W. Gibson.
