The requirement for this senior award is excellence
in academic subjects. Each recipient will receive a
certificate and a $100 award. Recipients are:
Stephanie Moore
Stuart Dunn
- James Lewis Howe Award
This is presented by the Virginia Blue Ridge Section

major chosen by the chemistry department. The award
was presented at the April meeting of the Blue Ridge
Section to Clark Ramsey. Ramsey was recognized
for this honor given an additional $100.
- Hypercube Scholar Award
This senior award, which consists of a certificate and
a copy of the Hyperchem molecular modeling software
package is presented annually by Hypercube, Inc. We
try to select a recipient who will make effective use
of this very expensive -- it retails for more than $2000!
-- and powerful software. The recipient is Julie Heinecke.
- Phi Lambda Upsilon Award
Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national chemistry honorary
society, recognizes an outstanding senior in our department
each year. The Chemistry Department
presented the certificate and $100 to Mary Spencer.
- Undergraduate Research Award
The Chemistry Department has had a long tradition of
supporting undergraduate research. We recognize excellence
in research with a certificate and an award of $100.
Students are nominated by the research supervisor and
approved for the award by the Undergraduate Committee.
Erika Bechtold was recognized for her excellence
in undergraduate research.
- Analytical Chemistry Award
The Division of Analytical Chemistry of the American
Chemical Society provides an Undergraduate Award in
Analytical Chemistry to a chemistry major to recognize
students who do well in college-level analytical chemistry.
This year the award, which consists of a certificate,
$100-, an honorary membership in the Divisuon of Analytical
Chemistry, and a subscription to the journal Analytical
Chemistry, goes to Joseph Zadrozny.
- CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award
For many years the Chemical Rubber Company Press has
provided undergraduate awards in Freshman Chemistry
to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement in first-year
college chemistry. It consists of a certificate, $100,
and a copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and
Physics. This year's awardees are Wesley Morris and James Mills.
- Viers Achievement Award
A Virginia Tech alumnus, Dr. Don Lee, has donated money
to provide a $100 award for the students who have overcome
large odds to succeed in General Chemistry. Our award
winners this year are:
Courtney Baskeyfield
Nina Camoriano
Amanda Edwards
Stephanie Voshell
- McGrath Award
The McGrath Award goes to an undergraduate student who has excelled in Polymer Chemistry. The award was presented to Matthew Green.
- Stars of Excellence Award

- Graduate Research Awards
It is certainly fair to say that the lifeblood of any
chemistry department is the graduate students who perform
the great majority of research in the department. The
Chemistry Department has had a long tradition of excellence
